Eligibility Guidelines

Blood Donation Eligibility Guidelines

In order to be eligible to donate blood, you must meet a set of standard reuqirements and guidelines. Please see the following guidleines to see if you are elibible to donate.

General Requirements

  • Age: 18 years old
  • Weight: At least 110 pounds
  • Diet: A well balanced meal is recommended within four hours of donation
  • Health: General good health, feeling well on day of donation
  • Identification: Valid photo identification such as a driver’s license, state identification card, passport, other photo ID, etc.

Do not donate if any of the following applies to you

  • You are a man who has had sex with another man even one time since 1977.
  • You are a past or present intravenous drug abuser.
  • You are a man or woman who has given or received money or drugs for engaging in sex since 1977.
  • You are a person with hemophilia who has received clotting factor concentrates.
  • You have been a sexual partner of any of the above, within the past 12 months.

Do not donate if any of the following apply to you

  • AIDS: You are a person with symptoms or laboratory evidence of HIV infection.
  • Cancer: Malignant Melanoma, hematological, cancers such as Hodgkin’s Disease, leukemia, lymphomas, other malignant tumors
  • Hepatitis: A history of viral hepatitis after the age of 11, or a positive lab test for the virus
  • Organ Failure: Kidney, heart, lung, or liver failure
  • Recreational Drug Use (by injection): Having injected yourself with drugs not prescribed by a physician
  • United Kingdom: You have visited or lived in England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Isle of Man, Channel Islands, Gibraltar or Falkland Islands for a total of 3 months or more from 1980 thru 1996.
  • Europe: If you have spent a cumulative of 5 years or more anywhere in Europe since 1980.
  • U.S. Military/Dependents/Civilian Military Employee: If you have spent a cumulative of six months or more between 1980 thru 1996, on a military base in Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Turkey, Italy, or Greece.
  • Travel: Travel to certain countries may temporarily restrict you from donating blood.

You may need to wait before donating blood if you have any of these conditions

  • Abortion/Miscarriage…6 week wait if pregnancy terminated in 3rd trimester, otherwise no wait
  • Acupuncture…Can donate if single-use equipment is used (documented)
  • Alcohol Consumption…no wait unless intoxicated
  • Anemia (past diagnosis)…no wait if corrected
  • Blood Donation, Apheresis…48 hours
  • Blood Donation, Whole Blood…8 weeks
  • Cancers…at the discretion of Blood Bank’s Medical Doctor
  • Cold…if symptom free for 72 hours
  • Cough…No wait if no sore throat or fever
  • Diabetes…No wait if medically controlled and not dependent on insulin
  • Ear and Body piercing…12 months
  • Electrolysis…See Acupuncture
  • Gonorrhea…12 months
  • Heart Disease (no heart medications):
  • Angina or Heart Attack (MI)-written approval of doctor
  • Angioplasty or bypass surgery…12 months
  • Hepatitis Contact…depends on type of contact
  • Herpes…Free of fever/systemic symptoms
  • High Blood Pressure…must be <180/<100
  • Immigration from malarial area…3 years
  • Malaria…3 years
  • Pregnancy…6 weeks after delivery
  • Recent Surgery…when released from MD’s care & depends on type of surgery
  • Sore Throat…until well, no symptoms
  • Syphilis…12 months
  • Tattoo…12 months
  • Travel to malarial area…12 months

Immunizations/Vaccines (shots)

  • Flu/Pneumonia, allergy shots…No Wait
  • Hepatitis A & B…24 hours
  • MMR, Rubella (German Measles)…4 weeks
  • Tetanus, Pertussis, Diptheria, Typhoid, and Cholera…No wait
  • TB Skin test…no wait if no redness or swelling
  • Rubeola (measles), Yellow fever, Mumps, and Oral Polio…2 weeks
  • Varicella (Chicken Pox)…4 weeks

Medications

  • Accutane…1 month after therapy complete
  • Allergy medications…No wait
  • Aspirin…36 hours for platelet donation
  • Antibiotics…24 hours after last dose (if for acne, no wait)
  • Flagyl…No wait
  • High blood pressure medicine…No wait
  • Oral Contraceptives…No wait
  • Propecia…1 month after last dose
  • Proscar…1 month after last dose
  • Tegison (for Psoriasis)…Permanently deferred
  • Tetracycline (for acne)…No wait
  • Vitamins…No wait
