Echocardiography is a diagnostic test that uses ultrasound waves to produce an image of the heart muscle and the heart's valves.
All clinical and research imaging is performed in our laboratory using the most technologically advanced equipment available. 100% of our imaging systems are equipped with state-of-the-art harmonic imaging. These machines are all digitally linked to the Medical Center for immediate access to the highest quality images from each location. In addition, our laboratory is one of the most experienced in the use of contrast agents with echocardiography, having used contrast in well over 1,000 patients.
Most importantly, the power of this advanced technology is harnessed by a dedicated team of ultrasound professionals - consisting of an energetic and creative staff of sonographers, nurses and physicians.
Whether you are a patient looking to learn more about your options, a physician wishing to expand your knowledge of echocardiography, a referring doctor looking for an ideal site to send your patient for an echocardiogram, or a research group seeking to evaluate emerging ultrasound technology, this site will allow you to explore the people and the programs that place our laboratory on the cutting edge of echocardiography.
Our Services
Transthoracic Imaging
Noninvasive assessment of heart function and valvular disease (since all echo equipment at UIC incorporates the most advanced technology available, including harmonic imaging, these scans permit unprecedented diagnostic information )
Stress Tests Supplemented with Echocardiographic Imaging
Our group is highly experienced with the use of echocardiography to improve the accuracy of stress tests-either during treadmill exercise or bicycle exercise. For those who are not able to exercise., our group is highly experienced in performing stress tests with medication as a substitute for exercise (dobutamine echocardiograms).
Special Applications of Ultrasound
Certain conditions require special evaluation with ultrasound. Incredible detail of heart function can be identified by highly refined images obtained by swallowing a small ultrasound microphone (transesophageal echocardiography). This approach is sometimes helpful in preparation for certain types of heart surgery.
Our Team
Physicians - all board certified cardiologists who have intensive training and experience in echocardiography.
Sonographers - a superb group of highly qualified, and personable professionals who are experts at harnessing the power of ultrasound to obtain the best images possible
Nurses – a select group of outstanding former intensive care unit and surgical care unit nurses are an integral part of our team
