Emergency Room

ambulanceThank you for visiting the pages of the Department of Emergency Medicine on the University of Illinois Medical Center website. We are a specialized team of physicians, nursing staff and other professionals who help you and your family during the difficult and frightening time of a medical emergency. Our critically ill or seriously injured patients need state-of-the art diagnostic services and expert care, and that is exactly what we offer - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Our newly-renovated emergency room is equipped to handle your needs. In addition, our Clinic at O’Hare International Airport provides an exceptional level of care for travelers and airport personnel. Our pledge, wherever we provide services, is to treat you with the respect, privacy and efficiency you deserve.

Our Services

The Emergency Room is responsible for the evaluation, resuscitation and medical stabilization of patients of all ages who present with acute illness or injury. Once stabilization has occurred and therapy initiated, patients are evaluated for either admission or continued outpatient treatment, with care coordinated either by their primary care physician or, if needed, by a physician at the Medical Center. Every effort is made to involve the primary care physician in the treatment plan of the patient.

Medical emergencies are as varied as the people who have them. We most often see patients with the following:

  • Cardiac problems, including shortness of breath and heart attacks
  • Automobile, snowmobile, motorcycle and other vehicular accidents
  • Falls
  • Minor and serious accidents that result in broken bones or other orthopedic problems
  • Playground, athletic, workplace and school related accidents
  • Asthma and other breathing emergencies
  • Severe pain and/or bleeding
  • Poisoning
  • Acute psychiatric problems or emotional distress
  • Acute episodes of chronic disease or illness
  • Injuries caused by violence
  • Burns

The Clinic at O’Hare International Airport opened in November, 1995, and is located in Terminal 2. It is staffed by emergency physicians and radiology technicians. Hours are 7am-7pm, Monday through Friday, and 9am-5pm on weekends and holidays. It is open 365 days a year. Services include:

  • X-ray and EKG
  • Diagnostics such as urinalysis, rapid strep test, Accucheck, quick Hemoglobin,
  • UCG, cholesterol/lipid screening

  • Treatment for wounds or lacerations

The Clinic at O’Hare treats approximately 8500 patients and provides 3000 flu shots per year.
