Physicians and staff in Geriatric Medicine are dedicated to helping seniors maximize their functional status through a multi-disciplinary

  • Comprehensive Geriatric Assessments: Geriatricians and staff offer comprehensive assessments of older adults experiencing age-related problems with memory loss, falls, urinary incontinence, medications, frailty, mood, weakness, arthritis and complex or chronic medical conditions. Ask your doctor to request a Geriatric Consultation for this evaluation.
  • Continuum of Care: University of Illinois is one of a handful of hospitals nation-wide with a special Geriatric Reactivation Unit which integrates acute health care and recovery of senior patients.  Geriatric consultations, primary care in the outpatient Geriatric center, home health and long-term care programs also assist older patients in a continuum of care.
  • Aging Research: Research focuses on memory enhancement, Alzheimer's disease, urinary incontinence, the aging immune system, exercise and heart failure management. Collaborative research involves arthritis, long-term care, falls and home health care.
  • Comprehensive Medical Evaluations: The Geriatric Medicine physicians and staff provide comprehensive medical evaluations, follow-up medical care, and assistance with long-term care plans. We are experts in home and nursing home care, including palliative and hospice care.

Several specialized programs are available at the University of Illinois Medical Center for care of Seniors:

  1. COAP program: Care of the Aging Parent program has an inter-disciplinary team that helps adult children manage parents who are frail or have medically complex conditions.
  2. Senior Healthcare: In addition to regular medical care, individuals enrolled in Medicare can be evaluated and followed in the Geriatric Medicine clinic with a philosophy of functional improvement.
