Neurotology
Dizziness, imbalance and vertigo are common to all ages but occur more frequently in the elderly. Often there is associated hearing loss, a ringing in the ears or discharge from the ears. A spectrum of diseases affecting different body systems can cause these symptoms of dizziness. As such, patients not only require an accurate study of the vestibular or balance system, but the collaborative expertise of specialists from other disciplines.
The University of Illinois Medical Center offers a unique approach to evaluating and treating patients with dizziness. At the Torok Vestibular Laboratory, consultants from related disciplines, including neurology, neurosurgery, neuroradiology, ophthalmology, neuroophthalmology, vestibular neurocognition, internal medicine and pharmacy provide comprehensive evaluation and management plans for patients.
Sophisticated Diagnostic Technology
The Torok Vestibular Laboratory uses cutting-edge diagnostic techniques, many of which were developed at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Eye movements are recorded by an advanced infrared system, replacing the ENG system. Balance is tested by the Torok monothermal caloric test, which accurately defines the location of the problem. Data from these and other tests are then analyzed by a custom-written computer program and the results are correlated with patient history and physical examination. The full vestibular function test takes 1-1/2 to 2 hours. Facilities for specialized audiological tests are also available and, when necessary, auditory brainstem response testing (ABR) and otoacoustic emission testing (OAE) are obtained in addition to the standard audiometric tests.
Research Committed to Patient Care
Through clinical research being conducted at the Torok Vestibular Lab, the University of Illinois Medical Center is able to offer patients the most advanced care. The lab is helping to increase our understanding of the pathophysiology, diagnosis, natural history and management of patients with dizziness and serves as a resource to the medical community on new advances in these areas.
