Preventative (Interventional) Cardiology

Preventative (Interventional) Cardiology

Did you know that the first sign of heart disease is often a heart attack or sudden death?  The good news is that up to 80% of heart disease can be prevented (but you need the right tools).  Conventional approaches for determining your risk are often incomplete.  Our center features advanced approaches not widely available including assessment for risk factors that include, but go far beyond conventional tests of cholesterol (many of which are treatable with natural options) as well as advanced coronary calcium scans for early detection of plaque build-up.  Please protect yourself and the ones you love.  Get screened for heart disease.  Prevention is, by far, the best medicine!

Heart Screening FAQs

Am I at risk of getting heart disease?
Your risk is increased if you have:

What can I do to prevent heart disease?
The best approach is to head off trouble before it develops.  Our specialized prevention program features the following:

  • Test for Rich Factors:
Standard cholesterol tests are important, but can also be misleading since up to half of those with heart disease have seemingly normal cholesterol levels.
  • Going Beyond Cholesterol:
Prevention experts at the University of Illinois Medical Center can test for a variety of “hidden” risk factors that go beyond standard cholesterol tests.  These tests can help explain why heart disease runs in certain families.  Best of all, these new risk factors are often treatable with natural approaches.
  • Coronary Calcium Scans: Early Detection of Plaque
Prevention specialists at the University of Illinois Medical Center have specialized expertise in coronary calcium testing, a non-invasive test that can check for early evidence of plaque in the arteries of your heart.
  • High Resolution Ultrasound Imaging
High resolution ultrasound is used to add a much higher level of accuracy to conventional stress tests.
  • Wide Variety of Prevention Approaches
We have a great deal of experience in the area of prevention and will work with you to develop an individualized program based on your needs and preferences.  Treatment options always include diet and lifestyle approaches, natural options, and conservative use of medication if needed.

What you can expect during your evaluation

  • Careful assessment of your medical history and thorough heart exam
  • Full cholesterol profile with breakdown of “good” and “bad” cholesterol
  • Individualized plan based on your needs that could include tests for inherited (and treatable) risk factors, coronary calcium scans for early detection of plaque, and stress testing with high resolution ultrasound
