Respiratory Care ServicesOutpatient Pulmonary CareWe staff a comprehensive pulmonary care outpatient clinic for the evaluation and treatment of patients with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD), which includes chronic bronchitis, emphysema, alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, adult cystic fibrosis, and other diseases. We also treat interstitial lung diseases, other disorders including unspecified shortness of breath, cough or abnormal chest x-rays or CT scans. We perform risk assessment and modification advice prior to elective surgery. We work in close coordination with smoking cessation programs. We see patient initiated visits as well as referrals from practitioners in other fields of medicine, including other pulmonologists, internists, surgical specialists and other disciplines. In addition, we staff a respiratory failure clinic where we screen and treat patients with advanced lung disease. Modalities include assessments for oxygen therapy, rehabilitation programs and surgical options such as lung transplant. Testing laboratoriesWe provide a full service pulmonary function laboratory for both inpatients and outpatients. Testing modalities include spirometry, lung volume determination, diffusion capacity determination, painless (topical analgesic) drawing of arterial blood gases, methacholine or exercise challenge tests, six-minute walk tests, cardiopulmonary stress tests, maximum inspiratory and expiratory force measurement, and metabolic cart determination of caloric needs (oxygen uptake). The bronchoscopy service offers a full spectrum of minimally invasive bronchoscopy techniques for both inpatients and outpatients. Modalities include fiberoptic inspection, lavage, brushings, biopsies and trans bronchial needle aspirations, and placement of intratracheal and intrabronchial stents.
